Our Mission

SLYA is a non-profit that strives to build a forum where Sierra Leonean Youths can learn about and be proud of their Culture, Identity, Heritage and History.

Empowering Young People for the Sierra Leonean Renaissance

Our Objectives

  • Strive to make the youth develop a sense of self-reliance and self-confidence that will enable them to take responsibility for their future.

  • Build enlightened youth that know and respects their Culture and History, proud of their Identity and Heritage.

Founded in 2014, the Sierra Leone Youth Association is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization led and driven by young Sierra Leoneans and fellow youth with African backgrounds living in Philadelphia, United States of America. Since the organization’s creation, SLYA strives to promote active youth participation, diversity programming, community outreach and cultural awareness by providing safe alternative programs and opportunities for youth to unlock their potential. Based on the strong belief that Sierra Leone from the Diaspora are Key actors and serve as a bridge between the Sierra Leonean and American society. We are proud of the work we do and feel that it benefits not just the youth and families we serve, but the community as a whole. By providing quality recreation options we give children alternatives to the streets. By providing guidance and mentoring we empower children to make smart, healthy decisions. By providing academic support and college prep work, we help ensure that our participants are equipped to make a positive impact on others.
